COPE Ontario stands with the hundreds of workers who have been laid off by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) in northern Ontario.
With 136 jobs cut in Sudbury, 55 in Thunder Bay, 20 in Sault Ste. Marie, 15 in North Bay and 12 in Timmins, these cuts will reduce the support for injured workers in northern communities where healthcare is already difficult to access.
As Steve Mantis, treasurer of the Thunder Bay and District Injured Workers Support Group, put it, the cuts show “a lack of concern for the workers here in the north.”
These job losses land on northern communities that have already been hit hard by tariffs, plant closures and layoffs. WSIB is a provincial agency, and the Ford government has the power to keep these jobs in the north.
Opposition MPPs have already called on the government to do exactly that. COPE Ontario adds our voice to that call: reverse the cuts, and keep good jobs and essential services where northern workers need them.
