Prime Minister Mark Carney says the federal government is seeking private investment to run Canada’s four major airports: Toronto-Pearson, Montreal-Trudeau, Calgary and Vancouver.
A new report from the Canadian Labour Congress lays out what’s actually at stake here. CLC estimates private owners would need these airports to bring in 15 to 20 percent more revenue than they do today, and that money doesn’t appear out of nowhere. It comes from higher fees and fares for travellers, lower labour costs and staffing for workers, and less revenue flowing back to the federal government, which currently receives about $525 million a year from these airports.
To put it plainly: investors’ quest for revenue will hurt average working Canadians.
