June is National Indigenous History Month. This is a time for us to recognize and celebrate the rich histories and cultures of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples across Canada.
This month, and every month, COPE Ontario is committed to learning about the history of Indigenous culture, the violence of colonialism and the enduring resilience of the communities most affected by it. While this is a hard history to learn – it is a necessary one – especially when this history has been clouded and belittled by imperial powers for so long.
Yet, perhaps most of all, we are committed to uplifting and celebrating the power of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples and their contributions to culture. There are many Powwows, festivals, exhibitions and learning opportunities happening across Ontario this summer and we encourage all our members and the general public to attend those close to you.
We also encourage folks to deepen their understanding of Indigenous histories by taking a short-course or reading books by Indigenous authors – see our list for some recommendations to get started.
The process of reconciliation requires active, ongoing participation from all of us. Keep learning today!
