Local 529 Member Honoured for International Work
COPE member Andrew Hazlewood was honoured in North Bay when he was inducted into the Nipissing Disrict Human Rights Hall of Fame. Hazlewood, a member of COPE Local 529, employed at the Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board was honoured for his charity work in Costa Rica.
Andrew and his Duke of Edinburgh high school students took school supplies to benefit hundreds of students, painted an elementary school, financed the purchase of a daycare centre and cleaned the facilities to prepare it for children and construction of a drug rehabilitation centre.
Andrew has visited and volunteered in Costa Rica for the last three years. The North Bay nugget quoted Jose Mauricio Perez Rodiguez, an English teacher at Sarchi North School in Costa Rica: “every year teachers, students and the people of Sarchi wait excitedly for the visit of Andrew Hazelwood (sic) and the North Bay Group”.
Andrew’s works costs money and donations are accepted. COPE Ontario has made a donation to this fine work and encourages its locals to do so also. Contact our office for further information on making a donation to support this fine work.
